Title. #unbinary
Date. May - September 2017
INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
This was my biggest bet, I wanted to really see how far I could get: my budget for this project was very low and my equipment not as good as I wanted it to be, but I had a ticket to Italy, one to London and I was working on something which really mattered to me.
I chose video as the main medium because my passions are photography and videomaking and I wanted to use these three months to develop something I could entirely be passionate about.
I tried to present it in a very simple way but I would be happy to speak about it more, this is something that really caught my heart.
Enjoy!

The goal of this project is to deconstruct norms and ideas linked with intersex and gender in today’s society, question them, open conversations with a positive yet more introspective point of view using as main medium short, independent videos which can be shareable and easy to watch.
Every video will have its own function, theme, style and message, some of them interview-based, others script-based.

INSIGHTS
Low awareness of the existence of intersex people
Confusion between the notion of intersex and the notion of hermaphrodite
Usually when speaking about intersex tone of voice tend to be sensationalising and gloomy
Increasing intersex activism leads to small changes
No integration of intersex in societies
CONFUSION
AWARENESS

TONE
OF VOICE
This project wants to solve two needs: raise awareness about intersex and create a community where intersex people can feel free and accepted.
The first issue is dealt using short videos: their goal is to take some of the themes that involve gender and intersex problems and question them, opening conversations on something that right now is being ignored by the media.
The videos will speak a common language with the target audience, millennials and teenagers that are going to be future parents and are right now in a position in their life where they are able to question what society taught them.
videos

All of them will be on a website, they will be shareable and embeddable and it will be a great platform to have them all together: this will also answer to the second purpose, the need to create a community.
Many interviews to intersex people have proven that it is common, when finding out about their condition, the feeling of being alone and not understood because they are different to what people are used to.
This website will show them that not only there are a lot of intersex people in the world, maybe even more than they realize, but that there are also a lot of non-intersex people ready to support them, to accept them without seeing any difference.
website
home page and competitions
There will be competitions, likely one every six months, that will involve videomakers from all over the world: the main focus will always be raising awareness on intersex’s condition and trying to open new conversations about this matter. The themes will be different every time and they will always be original, seeing that intersex cause is so not well known around the world, and the videos that will come out from the competition will give a new point of view on them.
To promote the website UN-BINARY, through Intersex organizations (Intersex UK, InterACT, Intersexioni, OII) Vice and Dazed and Confused online magazines, a series of posters will be released, using captions from people who usually mislead the term intersex. I interviewed and spoke with around 50-60 people around UK and Italy about this project, and when asking people if they knew what intersex meant, the answers were usually linked to people being gay, transgender or hermaphrodites.
The #UNBINARY will eventually lead to an Instagram page and, of course, the website.
